    The grand, 11-story Atlanta Biltmore Hotel and adjacent 10-story Biltmore Apartments were originally developed by John Bowman and financed by William Candler, son of Coca-Cola magnate, Asa Candler. The Neo-Georgian design of The Biltmore was intended to reflect the graceful "New South" and appeal upper-class clientele. The Biltmore Hotel was located in an upper-class residential neighborhood, close to downtown, but separated from the downtown business district. With the train system and availability of cars, it was considered a convenient location. The $6 million Atlanta Biltmore opened in 1924 with great fanfare. A train was chartered to bring prominent hoteliers from New York City, and the opening dinner-dance that evening was broadcast nationally on the radio. The Atlanta Biltmore, known as the South's premier hotel, hosted galas, tea dances, debutante balls and recitals. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Mary Pickford, Bette Davis and Charles Lindbergh stayed at the Atlanta Biltmore. WSB, the South's first radio station, broadcast from its studios inside the hotel, and the radio tower on the hotel roof became an Atlanta landmark. Competition from more modern downtown hotels forced the Atlanta Biltmore into decline in the 1960's. In 1997, the Novare Group purchased and renovated the Biltmore property. The historic Biltmore Apartment building was converted into a luxury condominium, the Biltmore House.
